Old Dog Winter Check List

Winter is here and the temperature is dropping which can make for uncomfortable times for our older canine friends. To avoid our old mates suffering unnecessary discomfort this winter here are a couple of tips.

  1. Watch for leg stiffness, difficulty rising in the morning or signs of lameness. If any of these are present, medications are needed to control the pain so call your vet.
  2. Adequate bedding for older dogs is really important. Thick high density foam with a washable cover is great for old joints. Remember big dogs have trouble getting up off the floor as they get older so a raised bed about tummy height will make it so much easier for them. (I know a Great Dane who has his own lounge)
  3. Dog coats are a great idea and available in all sizes and materials from thin wool to sheepskin lined waterproof WeatherBeetas. These can be worn to go for walks or put on at night like PJ’s.
  4. Nutrition. Veterinary senior diets are very beneficial. Talk to your vet about which one is best and start them as soon as possible.
